SOI System’s Approach to Learning Problems

SOI Systems is a company with a 50 year history of addressing student learning problems. Our focus has been primarily on making sure that the student’s capacities for learning are matching the expectations of the teaching situation – whether that is in a school, a university, or less formal circumstances like home schooling.

When the student’s capacities for learning do not match the expectations of the learning situation, we take a clinical approach to the situation – isolate and identify the learning problem; make a preliminary diagnosis, test to find the probable cause; prescribe an intervention; and monitor to see if the intervention is effective.

This is not a one-size-fits-all approach – it is individualized for each student-client. On the other hand, as with any clinical practice, there are broad guidelines based on years of experience. These guidelines define three general areas.

INTELLECTUAL ABILITIES AND CONCEPTS

All learning situations are predicated on a set of expectations about the student’s cognitive abilities – acquisition of new data or concepts (cognition), recall of data acquired (memory), information Continue reading “SOI System’s Approach to Learning Problems”

Making the Most of SOI Test Results

SOI tests are tests of learning abilities. If someone is having difficulty learning, the cause may be a lack of learning abilities.

Our tests are a great way to get a snapshot of students’ learning abilities and to see their learning potential. Now that you know more about your students’ learning abilities, what’s next? How do you help all of these unique students?

EMPOWER YOUR STUDENTS. LET US HELP.

The SOI test results have profiled your students’ strong and weak abilities. Now what?

SOI CFU: Filling in the Blanks

What’s the big deal about CFU? Ask Brian.

“Brian can’t tell the difference in a 5 and a 3 and he sure can’t begin to read! He’s severe! Good luck on that one!” That was my first introduction to a very “special” student as I began my career in education.

Brian had a problem with CFU. CFU is just one of six intellectual abilities that you have to have to be ready to read. What does that mean? And what does identifying a picture tell me about being able to read?

In the world of the Structure of Intellect, CFU stands for Cognition of Figural Units. It is the ability to look at a picture or representation of an object that has been partially erased and to be able to tell what that object is. In other words, it is the ability of your brain to fill in the blanks and make sense of what seems at first to be only random marks on the page. This skill, when applied to letters or symbols, makes up the gateway to reading.

Remember picture finding in your “Highlights for Children” magazines? It wasn’t just a fun activity, or a not so fun activity if you were unsuccessful. There was a reason for it! I now know that each of Brian’s eyes were seeing something different. That “dreamy” look he had when I looked at him now makes sense. How do you tell the difference in a 5 and a 3 when one eye places the right angle at one spot on the page and the other eye places it elsewhere? And, maybe it doesn’t place it in the same place the next Continue reading “SOI CFU: Filling in the Blanks”

SOI Online Learning Abilities Testing

Have you ever wondered about your learning strengths and weaknesses? This is the perfect opportunity for you to learn how you learn best! With our new online tests, you will find out more about your learning style and abilities – memory, comprehension, evaluation, critical thinking, and more – and the roles that they play in your life, education, and career.

We offer three testing packages: PLA (kindergarten – third grade), ALA (third grade – adult), or ALA with careers. Each package includes a pre-test consultation, a learning abilities profile/analysis, and a post-test consultation.

Upon completion of your (or your child’s) test, you will receive a full learning abilities analysis. You will also have a consultation with a member of the SOI staff to review the results, discuss any concerns, and receive suggestions for areas that may need improvement. Personalized training materials are available at an additional cost.

Please contact us for details and pricing, and with any questions you may have. We look forward to hearing from you and helping you take this next step in learning more about yourself!

Empowering Students to be Successful: SOI Paradigm

Working with children with learning challenges and concerns for the past twenty years has given a meaningful direction and purpose to my life. I have traveled extensively from New Delhi, India to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; Denver, Colorado; and Sacramento, California in my journey as a student and a facilitator for the children with learning issues and their families.

I started my career as a remedial education teacher at Educare, New Delhi, where I learned the basics of the Orton Gillingham approach of teaching phonics and reading skills under Dr. Sunita Sodhi. This was a very fulfilling experience of understanding the concepts of learning disabilities and helped me to do my PHD in the area of learning disabilities in math (dyscalulia) among the elementary grades.

I landed in Pittsburgh in the summer of 2003 with my family and worked as a volunteer with the Learning Disabilities Association of America for almost two years and simultaneously joined the 32 Degree Masonic Learning Center to do my certificate course in remedial education therapy under IMSLEC (International Multi-Sensory Language Education Council). This gave me an opportunity to study and gain insight into the details of the language teaching process and improve my style of teaching along with the correct pronunciation.

I enjoyed working with students and could observe the significant changes with the remedial education but always wondered for how long to provide these interventions to the students. School systems have been giving modifications to students with learning issues within the regular classrooms such as extra time to finish the assignments, assessing the student on multiple choice questions, or using the scribe to write the answers for them. These accommodations and benefits are available in the United States as well as in India.

This does help the students stay in the mainstream schools in an inclusive environment, but I always failed to understand that what happens to the child when he/she steps out of the school environment and interacts with the community at large. This system and the accommodations/modifications do not equip the students to apply problem solving skills, use their memory skills, or build comprehension abilities.

Our present education systems both in the United States and India are helping the students to do well in schools by modifying the environment but not giving them the essential learning skills and abilities to become independent learners.

My family and I moved to Denver in 2008 and I started working with a local school district as a substitute special education teacher. I started Continue reading “Empowering Students to be Successful: SOI Paradigm”

Learning Abilities Testing: How It Works

The key to remedy learning failure is to know why the failure is occurring and to have a systematic approach for eliminating the cause.

TESTS

SOI tests are tests of learning abilities. If students are having difficulty learning, the cause may be a lack of learning abilities. Learning abilities are more fundamental than curricular skills, yet most “diagnostics” of learning problems focus exclusively on curricular skills, and thus most remedial programs are focused on the same curricular skills. When the usual remedial programs are not successful, the causes of the learning problems have probably been misdiagnosed.

SOI tests offer an alternative source of diagnostic information, and SOI training modules offer an effective alternative by teaching learning abilities. SOI tests are available for ages ranging from five years old to adult. We have BRAND NEW online option for testing! Click here to learn more!

RESULTS

SOI tests profile the following abilities: reading, math, memory, comprehension, problem-solving, evaluation, and creativity. Comprehension, memory, and problem-solving abilities are needed from the first day of kindergarten to the last day of college.

Trauma Treatment and SOI ALA-PLA Learning Therapy Part 3

AN ADULT DYSLEXIC: PART 3

Click here to read the first part of Juan’s story.

“Can you teach me to read?” Juan asked me three months ago as his psychotherapy came to a close. Because he was beaten and humiliated as a boy for his “dyslexia,” I first treated his trauma in therapy and then applied SOI learning therapy. He has now taken both the computer test (ALA-PLA) and the CR test (paper and pencil).

You may remember what his profile revealed: with the exception of auditory memory, Juan tested at the bottom stanine in every ALA-PLA subtest! However, Juan did not feel comfortable on the computer and could not understand the test directions well. So, we gave him the CR test, explaining the directions one-on-one as he retook each subtest. The test was administered by Jamie Katz, Advanced SOI Trainer and co-founder of Brain Bridge SOI Training Center in Manhattan Beach, California.

After 3 months of SOI Learning Therapy, Juan scored at the Gifted level in NSI and DMU! The DMU, unsurprisingly, is autobiographical:

“FREE AS A BIRD”

ONCE I WAS A BIRD AND FLU OVER A RIVER. I SAW THIS SEA MONSTER AND I APPROACHED IT BUT TRIED TO EAT ME. I FLEW TOWARDS AN ISLAND WHERE THERE WERE MORE BIRDS. WE FORMED A COLONY AND BECAME MEN AND WOMEN AND WE BUILT A CITY THEN WE BUILT BOATS TO FISH AND RAISED FOOD.

WHEN I DIED THE SUN PICKED ME UP AND WENT THROUGH A SERIES OF TUNNELS TO WAIT FOR MY RETURN TO LIFE. THERE WERE DOORS WHERE I ENTERED, BUT THERE WERE HILLS BUT I KEPT ON CLIMBING…
