SOI System’s Approach to Learning Problems

SOI Systems is a company with a 50 year history of addressing student learning problems. Our focus has been primarily on making sure that the student’s capacities for learning are matching the expectations of the teaching situation – whether that is in a school, a university, or less formal circumstances like home schooling.

When the student’s capacities for learning do not match the expectations of the learning situation, we take a clinical approach to the situation – isolate and identify the learning problem; make a preliminary diagnosis, test to find the probable cause; prescribe an intervention; and monitor to see if the intervention is effective.

This is not a one-size-fits-all approach – it is individualized for each student-client. On the other hand, as with any clinical practice, there are broad guidelines based on years of experience. These guidelines define three general areas.

Using SOI in Business & Industry

MATCH CAREERS TO EMPLOYEES’ PROFILES OF ABILITIES. IDENTIFY UNTAPPED POTENTIAL. IDENTIFY EMPLOYEES AT RISK FOR EFFICIENCY.

SOI TESTING POSSIBILITIES

  • gifted abilities can suggest career possibilities and promotion
  • long standing learning disabilities are identified and remediation procedures are suggested
  • discover how character and personality interact with individual intellectual abilities

Use SOI for testing, identification, and training. Use all three for the most complete program, or use only the steps you need.

THE SOI DIFFERENCE

SOI testing is particularly fair to the linguistically or economically disadvantaged. Since the SOI test is wide spectrum (in particular, it includes Figural intelligence), it is possible for the disadvantaged to show their strengths. This allows you to make better placements.

SOI Memory Training

The Structure of Intellect assesses many different learning abilities. What often shows up as the lowest overall ability is memory – both visual and auditory.

If you think of memory as “the developed art of paying attention,” then you begin to understand why this is a growing concern in education, especially in elementary school.Comprehension is diminished by lower memory ability and problem-solving becomes frustrating when memory ability fails to recall correct information. Fortunately, SOI is in the business of training memory!

Classification: A Skill for Life

Comprehension of Figural Classes (CFC) at a lower level is the ability to group and sort. It is how we begin to comprehend. These are yellow; these are red. Beginning with same and different, we ask ourselves, “In what way are these things the same or different? Is this the only way they are the same or different? How else could they be grouped?”

The skill of logical thought is classification. In a very basic way, it helps us to make sense of our world. In a young child’s world it explains, “This is mama’s. This is daddy’s. This belongs to sister. It is not mine…unless I am two.”

At a young age, classification is what helps us make sense of our world. It gives order to our thinking. An older child may think, “These are crayons. These are markers. These are pencils.” We separate them for ease of use. As they enter school, they learn to organize their time. Now is the time to work. Now is the time to play. ALA-PLA: Remote SOI Career & School Placement Testing

CASE STUDY:  20 YEAR OLD MALE ON THE SPECTRUM

I have come to really enjoy using the ALA-PLA test globally. The SOI ALA results below illustrate a difficult case, and I’d like to explain how I, as a psychologist, discussed the results with the parents. The goal of testing was to provide guidance for future (college) educational and career paths. First, it was important for me to identify his interests: classic comic books, film editing, and photography. He took the SOI test on 2 medications: Focalin (ADHD) and Strattera.

SOI and Employment Training

SOI has been used successfully in many employment training programs.

Here in Canada, statistics in 2003 pointed to 41% low literacy rates (not much changed from 1994 and projected to continue well on into the future).
