He also treats Freudian paradigms as if bettelhelm are universally, naturally true, rather than shaped by culture.

Viewing these fairy tale characters as archetypes not of people but of life stages and the world as viewed by children makes a lot more sense than trying to portray them as real people with realistic inner lives, which is why translating even long fairy tales to feature film format requires a hell of a lot of work.

In this book Bettelheim explores how deeply significant these seemingly out-of-touch with the present world stories are for children’s development.

The legacy of Freud and Bettelheim have proven that it is. Hard not to admit that if you have siblings there were times you might have wished them dead, particularly when they seemed to be favoured ill you — even if you immediately rejected this wish. I think it might just be too dated for me: Bettelheim is a little bat-shit crazy sometimes, and he reads Freudian theory far too literally into classic fairy tales. I don’t like books that leave no room for individual interpretation.

The main problem I had with this book is Bettelheim s psycho Good in that it gets you interested in the original versions of stories like Cinderella, Snow White, etc.
